Summer Pet Safety: How to Keep Your Furry Friend Happy and Cool ☀️🐾
Summer is a time for sunny adventures, open windows, and long walks with your best furry friend. But while we can grab a cold drink or turn on a fan, our pets need a little help staying comfortable in the heat. Whether you’re in the UK, Europe, or Canada, rising temperatures can take a toll on dogs and cats often faster than we realise. So here’s a warm little reminder (ironically!) to keep things cool this summer.
1. Always have fresh water available 💧
It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to forget. Make sure your pet has constant access to cool, clean water both at home and on the go. Bring a travel bowl or water bottle for walks, and change the water often during hotter days.
Tip: If your dog or cat doesn’t drink much, try a pet fountain. Many animals prefer flowing water, and it encourages them to stay hydrated.
2. Create a cool, cozy chill-out space 🧊
Find the coolest spot in your home a shaded corner, near a breezy window, or under a fan and make it your pet’s summer sanctuary. Cooling mats, raised beds, or even a damp towel can make a big difference.
Avoid placing beds directly on tile, asphalt, or other heat-retaining surfaces they can get surprisingly hot during the day.
3. Pavement check: Too hot to touch = too hot for paws 🐾
Here’s an easy test: place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.
Walks are best early in the morning or later in the evening when the ground has cooled down. And if you’re unsure grassy parks are always a safer choice!
4. Keep grooming light and regular 🛁
Extra fur = extra heat. Regular brushing can help your pet stay cool and comfortable. But don’t shave double-coated breeds their coat actually insulates them against heat and sunburn.
Bonus: A light grooming session is also a sweet bonding time (and a chance to check for ticks or fleas).
5. Know the signs of heat stress
Pets don’t sweat like we do, so they’re more vulnerable to overheating. Watch for:
-
Heavy panting
-
Excessive drooling
-
Lethargy or weakness
-
Red gums
-
Vomiting
If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a shaded or air-conditioned area, offer cool water, and contact your vet if symptoms persist.
